Our judge for this competition was Gary Smith, and he offered the following general comment:

GENERAL COMMENTS:

1.     A number of the images have had their metadata removed.  This practice is not recommended, as a judge it is helpful to make specific recommendations for correction of camera technique.  The Australian Copyright Council does not recommend this practice as it makes the image an orphan and therefore very difficult to prove ownership.

2.     Both Novice and Open have very strong images which made both the placing and the scoring difficult so a score of 10 is a very good score as the images that scored higher are very strong images that will do well in most competitions.

3.     Novice grade I have concentrated main on Technical and camera technique for suggestions or improvement.

4.     For Open, assuming that these photographers are more advanced I have concentrated more on aesthetics.

5.     No one has created an image in Sepia!

6.     Many people have been using Auto exposure!  I suggest moving to manual as this will give you much greater creative control.
